Agathe Berjaut

Born in France, based in Oslo, Agathe Berjaut is an artist and fashion designer who uses her work to translate her experience of the everyday world into form and colour.  For the Global Colour Card 2025 – ‘Nuances’ – Jotun invited Agathe to create a series of large-scale abstract murals using this year’s colours.

Developed over a number of weeks and painted by hand by Agathe, the artworks brought together soft lines, organic forms, complementary shades and engaging contrasts – a beautiful demonstration of the power of colour to bring together the elements of a space and create visually and emotionally rich environments.

Here, Agathe discusses her approach to colour as an artist, and explains how her collaboration with Jotun came together…

Create unexpected contrasts

How do you approach to colour and form as an artist?

My work is intuitive and organic. I work with a multidisciplinary mindset. For both personal and commissioned work, I am inspired by visual stimuli and the intonations I sense in my everyday life, which I often translate by playing and mixing techniques to create unexpected contrasts. Creativity is really the nerve that connects my work across fields.

I strive to be free in my approach. I began with an academic drawing language, learned in Fine Art school, but today it is more about what I feel. I am working on breaking and unlearning the rules.

Colour and form are an inseparable duo. Colour often leading to composition where forms need to find their place to create a harmonious balance. It is difficult to explain the feeling of certainty you get when you see that colours and forms are in balance.

A good plan is essential

When you are working on a new art piece, do you start with lines and forms, or begin with the colour palette?

It is a combination of both. It goes hand in hand and depend on what type of artwork I am working on. If it is a painting, I often work from visual references, I then start with mixing colours to make sure I know my palette of highlights and shadows. For bolder ink drawings, I start with pure colours.

Telling stories with colours and craft

Did you have a clear plan for the piece from the beginning or did it develop organically?

I was presented with a brief about colours and the idea of creating an inspirational piece that used Jotun’s colours in new ways.

I worked on paper, sketching compositions of forms and colours before the final artworks were selected. It was important to create pieces that people can feel they could master at home, combining my aesthetic sense with that of Jotun. The last step was to create a large-scale reproduction of the sketches to make sure I had tried the techniques, and I knew more or less which materials I would need before I approached the big white walls…

Paint and colours

Colours are my alphabet

What does colour mean to you? Are there particular colours or nuances that you respond to especially strongly?

Colours are at the centre of what I do; they are my alphabet. But no colours can be seen alone; they always resonate to what surround them or to the way you combine them to each other. I use colours consciously, according to the need and the narration of the pieces I am working on.

Could you describe the style of your own home? What kind of furniture have you selected for your space?

I do not think about space at home in conventional ways. I combine colours. I paint from floor to ceiling in different nuances but I always choose dusty tones that can easily work together and that do not eat up the space.

My home is an eclectic mix of travel memories, furniture – inherited or handmade by my partner – and colour! Every piece that comes into it has great sentimental value. They are connected to the family, memories and craftsmanship. In our home, we honour the handcrafted.
